Breast Implant Removal/Exchange

The following images are from actual patients treated by Dr. Elisabeth Potter who have undergone breast implant removal or exchange after breast reconstruction.

This patient, a 40 year old female, has a history of breast cancer. She previously underwent bilateral mastectomies and implant reconstruction with another plastic surgeon. She was unhappy with her breast size and decided against reconstruction. She underwent bilateral implant removal with capsulectomies and adjacent tissue transfer wound closure.

This 49 year old female has a  history of right breast cancer. She underwent a right nipple sparing mastectomy with textured shell implant reconstruction with another surgeon. She had an existing left implant that was left in place and also underwent a left mastopexy for symmetry. She disliked the appearance of her breasts and did not feel comfortable with the right textured shell implant. She underwent a bilateral enbloc resection of implants and an exchange for smooth implants along with a left breast adjacent tissue transfer.

This 48 year old patient presented with a history of left breast invasive ductal carcinoma. She had previously undergone bilateral skin-sparing mastectomies and implant reconstruction with saline implants. She disliked her implants and chose to have bilateral implant removal with capsulectomies and breast skin ATT to achieve a smoother chest contour.

This 56 year old female was diagnosed with right breast cancer in 2007. She underwent bilateral skin-sparing mastectomies and implant reconstruction by another plastic surgeon in 2008. She desired to have her implants removed and go flat. She underwent bilateral implant removal with capsulectomies and flat closure in 2019.

This 47 year old patient has a  history of left breast cancer and BRCA2 gene mutation. In 2013, she underwent bilateral nipple sparing mastectomies and implant reconstruction with another surgeon. She opted to undergo bilateral implant removal and DIEP flap breast reconstruction in 2018. She had 2 small revision surgeries.

This 39 year old patient has a history of right breast cancer. She previously underwent bilateral mastectomies with implant based reconstruction, using textured shell implants, with another surgeon.  Years later, she discovered she had a ruptured right implant and underwent bilateral implant exchange and capsulectomies.

This 47 year old patient was diagnosed with left breast DCIS in 2013, She underwent left lumpectomy and radiation therapy. She later opted for bilateral skin sparing mastectomies and had implant reconstruction with textured shell implants with another surgeon.  She was found to have right implant rupture and underwent bilateral implant removal with capsulectomies and DIEP flap breast reconstruction in 2019.

This 46 year old patient has a history of left breast cancer. She underwent a lumpectomy followed by completion mastectomy and tissue expander placement. She then had her left tissue expander exchanged for an implant and a right mastopexy, all with a different surgeon, in 2005. She presented to us to discuss revision surgery, as over time, her left implant had shifted toward her axilla. She underwent left implant removal and DIEP flap reconstruction.

This 44 year old patient has a history of right breast cancer. She initially underwent a right mastectomy with saline implant placement and left saline implant placement and mastopexy for symmetry, all with a different surgeon. This was followed by right breast and axillary radiation. After radiation, she developed capsular contraction in the right breast. She then consulted with us and underwent right implant removal and DIEP flap reconstruction. She underwent one revision surgery two years after her DIEP flap reconstruction.
